The Package

I shouldn't complain about the very prompt delivery of a product ordered online, should I?  If you answered "no" you just haven't been a reader long enough to understand how my brain works functions malfunctions … never mind, it's just as well you don't.

I recently pre-ordered an upgrade to Windows 7 while it was specially priced at $99.99 (USD).  When I got to the checkout section, I was informed that if my purchase was over $100.00, shipping was free.  Otherwise, it was about $8.00.  Being the thrifty soul that I am, I immediately "returned to shopping" to find something inexpensive to buy that I had a remote chance of using.  I found such a thing, added it to my order, and completed my purchase.

The 10" x 12" x 4" parcel arrived within 36 hours.  Pictures are said to be worth a thousand words, so those below should reveal … something.

Stinky Discovers Product

Now we come to the total non-greenness of the situation.  I ordered a $0.99 lanyard for a USB drive to get the free shipping.  Not only was the delivery faster than I thought possible, but the eventual delivery of the software will also be free.  This seems to mean that by spending that $0.99 I saved about $17.00 in shipping costs and had a piece of string delivered to me as if it were needed as urgently as a pacemaker battery.  The only way I can reconcile this with my attempt to live green is to believe that it somehow helped the box manufacturing industry, the warehouse packaging people, and the delivery service in their respective businesses and propped up the sagging American economy.  I'll recycle everything except the piece of string.  I promise.  *sigh*

Peace, Doc

When I ordered Microsoft Office 2007, I had a bit of a problem opening the container the disc came in. Quite a bit of a problem. Who do you call when that happens--I couldn't think of anyone I wanted to know that I couldn't open the box. I expected if I couldn't open the box, I would certainly have trouble installing the program. And I did, but only because of stupid instructions that didn't include the information that I should not try to enter dashes when typing in the user key. They are full of tricks, these computer people. I like the looks of Office 2007, and the Word documents therein; however, I can't find some of the formatting things I use all the time, like "select all," to mark an entire document for cutting and pasting, and how to have only single spacing instead of Microsoft's idea of different spacing used on different parts of a letter. Still I feel all up-to-date-ish, having this new software. I allowed IE to update itself also--that was a near disaster because afterward I couldn't do ANYTHING--every keystroke just froze the thing. I was desperate enough to actually read some of the "help" instructions and had to go through the listed steps to let the system return to an earlier, workable state. Somehow it kept the update though. All is good now. Scarey.

I get the feeling that stinky will be claiming the box too, so any attempts at recycling may be limited.

I think Andy Rooney did short piece on packaging in general, many years ago. You buy a small tube of something and it comes in this conglomeration of plastic and cardboard.
So, welcome to the lazy days of August, Doc.

Trying to live green is nearly an impossible task. It seems that those of us who actually care are thwarted at every decision we make. This is the perfect example of something way out of control. Why do company's use so much packaging? I just can't figure it out either Doc.
Blessed be

LMAO!!! Doc, are you sure the software is coming? They probably think they put it in the box, and somehow just forgot. How else can they justify sending that in a box like that? The good part of it, when these things happen is...............................................................doesn't it make you feel like a genius? I know I do.

Duct tape and Donuts are all very well---but only string theory can account for the number of yo-yos in elected office WORLDWIDE.

@ My late night viewers: Ms. Ana; I believe that this may have been an excellent, although accidental, demonstration of your point. Considering the resources used, power consumed, fuel burned, people paid, etc., my piece of string may have served a greater purpose than I first realized. Cassie; You are a deeper observer than I. I knew that duct tape was the fifth universal force, but had completely forgotten (or repressed) String Theory. This may have been related to one of my stepsons developing a Unified Donut Theory of subatomic physics which closely resembles String Theory if one substitutes really, really tiny donuts for the closed strings that are postulated. Hmm!? Just Mandy; Thank you for asking a question I can answer. The black ribbon (string) is about 18 inches long (doubled) and designed to hang around one's neck with a removable end piece which could attach to a hole in the case of a USB thumb drive or, as I am planning to make, a VIP badge to wear around the apartment to impress the cats. I don't believe that will really work, but it might baffle them for a moment or two before they laugh at me.

Peace, Doc

So how long is a piece of string Doc?

Cassie发表:
ah but you miss the psychic resonance or "synchronicity" about the importance of "a piece of string". I refer you to Guy de Maupassant's excellent short story on that theme and then to NOVA's wonderful introduction to string theory http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/elegant/

(and I ain't just stringin' you along, doc!)

Hey, they've got to keep the box manufacturers in business, as well as the brown paper manufacturers ... not to mention everyone else along the line. Reminds me of a fascinating short sci-fi story I once read - where to reduce consumption would cause total and utter economic failure worldwide ... so everyone was FORCED to consume ... only the "rich" were allowed to not be conspiciously consumptious ... scary how true that seems to be becoming.
